search engine optimisation
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Every user of the web will use a search engine at some point and it's important that your site is included in the search results. It's not much good if your site is on page 1000 or page 4 for that matter. The reason for this is that most people don't read past the first 2 pages of search results. So how do you increase your chances of getting your site on the first page?
Search Engine Optimisation - SEO
Keywords are the key
SEO is the art and science of optimising your website’s pages so they show up high in the search results index. This is done by deciding what keywords and phrases best describe your website. So for example if you were a florist you would want to target the keywords, flowers, roses, anniversary...you get the idea. So when a user has typed those keywords into the search engine you want your florist website to be at the top of the list in the search results.
Get Linked
The other deciding factor is how many other sites link to your site. If other sites link to you then your site will potentially rise in the search rankings because the search engine will consider your site more important. The more important those sites are that link to you, the more they will boost your ranking.
Tracking the trackers
There are many other factors that contribute to your search ranking and most of it relates to common sense. The knowledge to optimise your pages for search engines comes from trial and error. As you can imagine, search engines are not very forthcoming about how they rank pages and the algorithms involved. What we do know however is that search engines are trying to think like humans so they can deliver the most relevant results. Those SEO practitioners that conduct on-going research will know best how to optimise their client’s pages.
Don't cheat
Here at Generdyn we have had tremendous results by just getting the basics right. We don't delve into any of the exotic or underhanded techniques of black hat SEO practitioners. Techniques that could get your site banned from the search engines. We don't recommend you should either. We are a company that values its integrity and we like to deal with clients of the same mind. The bottom line is you don't need to take those kinds of risks if you’re willing to put in a little bit of hard work initially. It can pay huge dividends with none of the downsides of black hat SEO.
Be successful
For example our latest client the Budget Motel Chain was ranking very badly (page 5 or worse) for their target keywords, budget accommodation, budget motels, accommodation etc. After we applied some SEO expertise to the site, they now rank on the first page of google results. In fact since last checking they ranked No 1 across their target keywords which is an outstanding result considering the competition. As you can imagine they were very excited because targeted traffic has increased to their site.
Conclusion
Getting targeted traffic to your site comes from ensuring a solid foundation that can be built on. The key to any successful website is targeted traffic and search engines will be an important source of it. The next important step is to convert those visits to sales. I'll leave that topic for another time.
